Department of Immunology
Overview
The Department of Immunology at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences (SBMU) has a long-standing tradition of academic excellence, research innovation, and clinical relevance. Originally part of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology established in 1961, the Immunology Division became an independent department in 1991, laying the foundation for specialized education and research in the field of immunology in Iran.

1961 |
The Department of Microbiology and Immunology was established by Dr Mohammad Nayebi, a distinguished faculty member trained in the United States. |
1967–1980s |
Dr Yahya Hemmati introduced clinical immunology teaching practices, integrating bedside learning. Other renowned faculty, including Dr. Bayat, Dr. Sagharri, and Dr. Abar, contributed to the department's early growth. |
1980s–1990s |
A new generation of immunologists, including Dr. Parviz Pakzad, Dr Nariman Mosaffa, and Dr. Rezaeepour, helped expand the department’s academic and research activities. |
1991 |
The Department of Immunology was formally established as an independent unit. |
1995 |
Launch of the Master’s program in Immunology, with over 140 graduates to date. |
2012 |
Launch of the Ph.D. program in Immunology, with 21 doctoral graduates so far. |
2010 |
Host of the 10th Iranian Congresses of Immunology and Allergy in collaboration with the Iranian Society for Immunology and Allergy. |
2018 |
Host of the 14th Iranian Congresses of Immunology and Allergy in collaboration with the Iranian Society for Immunology and Allergy. |
Research and Achievements
The department has completed numerous research projects and published over 800 scientific articles in peer-reviewed international and national journals. Faculty and students actively participate in scientific congresses worldwide.
